further investigation reveals in my case that when this situation (the monitors appearing to not wake up) occurs, in fact the monitors are awake, but not receiving any signal - this implies that the USB-C dock gen2 is not waking properly. When I know I will connect to the Dock, I usually shut the Book down first.
